I never really knew much about this place. All I knew is that there was a little window that I often passed in York that displayed the most delicious looking meringues the size of my head! Finally the time came for me to venture inside and I really wished I had done it earlier.
Mannion & Co is a York bistro, deli, bakery and caterer down Blake Street which is just across the road from the tourist information centre and Ask restaurant.
It’s not that often we are in town early enough to have something you could call ‘brunch’ but a meeting at the bank dragged us out of bed so we decided to reward ourselves with food!
Mannion & Co is a small and cosy restaurant with a few small tables out the front and in a courtyard out the back. Fresh, quality produce is the order at Mannion with a blend of French, Italian and Yorkshire sourced food.
You can see the French influence instantly with gorgeous croissants, patisserie and bread out on show but nestled in amongst it is a selection of Yorkshire pies and sausage rolls!
After a friendly tip from the couple next to us (I think I may have stared a bit too much at their food!) we opted for a ‘Bits & Bobs’ board which was great value at £8. A sharing platter filled with Italian inspired charcuterie, cheese, olives and sun blushed tomatoes. Delicious!
Add to this two fresh, artisan coffees and it was the perfect mid morning meal. Mannion & Co also offer a range of daily blackboard specials which are always changing with deli goods and sandwiches to take away.
Before we left I just couldn’t resist an almond croissant and meringue to take home. A delicious sticky, soft meringue centre with a crisp almond shell – I wasn’t disappointed by the sweet I had been looking at for so long!
I imagine this popular little place can get quite busy around lunch time but if you do ever get a chance to visit I would highly recommend it. I will certainly be visiting again.
