Source Restaurant York – Slow Cooked Meats and Fresh Vegetarian Delights

Always keen to try the newest eateries York has to offer, we decided to give York’s new Castlegate restaurant ‘Source‘ a go.

Claiming to offer something for everyone, Source specialises in slow meats, superfoods and tasty vegetarian cuisine.

Source offers a cosy atmosphere, stylishly decorated with wooden panels, filament light bulbs and a mix of monochrome and multi-coloured cushions.

To start, dining as a group, we ordered the Stacked Nachos and Dough Board to share. The nachos were especially good, loaded up with guacamole, sour cream, salsa, smashed squash, jalapenos, cheese and a black bean dip. The avocados and jalapenos tasted so fresh! – a really nice change from soggy salsa and heavy cheese.

Next, we tucked into a Chicken Burger, Low & Slow Tray, Mushroom Burger and Halloumi Stack. All served with possibly the tastiest chips we’d ever eaten! It was refreshing to see lots of interesting looking vegetarian options on offer at Source, rather than the usual “mushroom risotto” being the only thing available for non-meat eaters.

To finish, we delved into a Chocolate Brownie, Lemon Cheesecake and, according to Source, “the best Tiramisu in the world made by a true Italian” – all of which were absolutely delicious.

The overall experience was calm and relaxed, with amazing food and extremely friendly and helpful staff. I personally can’t wait to go back and try more of their meat-free menu.

Source is based at 1 Castlegate and is open 12pm-10pm Monday – Friday, 11am-11pm Saturday.

Having also visited Source lately we absolutely loved this place. Simple and small menu with the best of both worlds – top quality meat cooked low and slow and interesting, fresh and tasty vegetarian options. There really is something for everyone – I don’t believe many non-vegetarian places nowadays would dare give a spot on their menu to ‘whole baked cauliflower’.

Plus, as someone with a definite sweet tooth it was nice to have some decent puddings on offer as well. Every single thing that came out of the kitchen was obviously prepared with skill and care. Would definitely recommend!
